What Insurance Covers (and Doesn’t) When You Tow

Here’s what most policies do—and do not—cover when you’re towing a trailer, plus what to ask your agent before pickup.
The usual patterns
Auto liability: Often extends to your trailer while it’s connected to your insured tow vehicle (bodily injury/property damage to others).
Collision/comp on a rented trailer: Not always included. Many policies don’t cover damage to the rental trailer itself—your rental agreement may make you responsible.
Cargo: Personal property or vehicle being towed is typically not covered by the trailer owner’s policy. Your own auto policy may or may not cover your vehicle on a trailer.
Roadside: Towing/roadside add-ons can help, but confirm they cover trailers.

What to do before pickup
Call your agent with the trailer type, dates, and estimated value.
Ask about liability, collision/comp on the trailer, and cargo.
Bring proof of insurance and a photo of your Driver’s License.
On the day
Inspect and photo the trailer before leaving.
Use proper straps and re-checks—prevention beats claims.
